Update - High winds (40kts at 3000ft) have cancelled all flights so far in Midlothian, TX.
The top competitive pilots in the country will converge deep in the heart of Texas for an early season showdown this weekend in Midlothian, TX for the Summer Balloon Classic. The town, located due South of the midpoint between Dallas and Fort Worth, is known as "DFW's Southern Star". The event will feature competitive balloon tasks, but also a host of other aviation related events including an air show with T-28's, air race, helicopters, sky diving, powered parachutes, balloon glow, and more.
The field of balloon pilots will be loaded with the top talent in the country. Featured competitors will be two past world champions and four past national champions including the reigning national champion, Nick Donner. On top of that, Event Director Pat Cannon is a two-time national champion himself. In all, as many as fourteen national championships will be accounted for and loads of other experience from top competitors nationally will be on hand. It's safe to say three of the nation's top five pilots will be on hand in the form of Joe Heartsill, Johnny Petrehn, and Nick Donner. The first flight is scheduled for Friday afternoon.
