BFA Great Lakes Regional Championship

US Nationals event director, Maury Sullivan, will be at the helm for this inaugural championship held in Frankenmuth, MI. With the top three places earning automatic invites to the ’11 Nationals expect a very competitive four days of flying. Paul Petrehn, Jeff Pestun, Steve King, Andy Baird, and Shawn Raya are some of the regions heavy hitters that will be competing this weekend. Pilot James Mitchell will be our field reporter at this event.
Frankenmuth has hosted a winter event and a spring event over the past few years. This is the first year for the spring event to be sanctioned as the Great Lakes Regionals. This resort town is nestled in the country side north of Detroit and through the hard work of Derrick Jones and Jim Engel has become a very balloon friendly region.
Friday Morning Update:
Competition director Maury Sullivan kicked off the great lakes regional championship with a 3 part task Friday morning. Competitors were sent out north of Frankenmuth, MI to start the flight with a hesitation waltz, followed by a judge declared goal, and ending the flight with a pilot declared goal (intersection with logger scoring). Overall results for the flight have yet to be released.
Friday evening looked to be promising with winds dying off as the evening went on. However, that proved not to be the case. With strong winds continuing throughout the evening, Sullivan canceled the flight just 15 minutes before the launch period ended without any balloons launching.
With day 1 of the Great Lakes Regional Championship in the books and good weather on the horizon, it looks to be anyone's title for the taking. Stay tuned for more updates throughout the weekend!
