FAI Balloon Commission Meetings
In the recent plenary meeting of the FAI Ballooning Commission a series of votes again led to the approval of the Brazilian 2014 World Championship bid, the original sanction was withdrawn several months ago because of the fear the organizer would not be able to meet certain parts of their bid. The Championship will be held in the town of Sao Carlos, about a four hour drive northeast of Sao Paulo.
Had the sanction not been re-awarded to the Brazilians the Lithuanians were prepared to step in with their intent to re-bid. Ultimately, it was determined that the Brazilians had satisfied the requirements of the CIA and any ambiguity about where the 2014 World Championship was clear up. More info on the event official website: http://www.balonismo.org.br/ Also discussed at the meeting were intent to bid letters for the 2016 World Championships. Saga, Japan and Albuquerque, NM USA have both submitted their intent to bid - both great ballooning cities. Each city and NAC will spend the next year coming up with their best package to present to the CIA at next year's plenary meeting in Switzerland. Saga last hosted the Championship in 1997 and has a long history of hosting competitive events, experience that will certainly benefit them in the bidding process. They've created a excellent YouTube video announcing there bid and highlighting the region's attractions and the awesome support of ballooning competition: http://youtu.be/0ja0n9v7vvA Albuquerque last hosted a Hot Air Championship in 1975, but have hosted Category 1 Gas Championships as recently the 2008 Gordon Bennett. One obstacle that will certainly have to be addressed is how the organizer plans to run the World Championship simultaneously with the popular Balloon Fiesta. Fiesta features more than 500 balloons that will crowd the skies and clog roads with non-participating pilots. As the original host of the World Championship, Albuquerque has grown to be known as the capitol of ballooning in the United States and features great attractions like Fiesta Park and the Abruzzo museum.
